Discovery Update for Families
Hello,
Is Spring finally showing up?
Please remember that we will be open this Friday April 3 until 1:00pm, as we have to compensate for our extra snow days. Families who observe Good Friday can request in writing to be excused. Without a request in writing (or text/email), your child will be marked absent.
Now that the Musical Theater workshop has ended with a wonderful show, Ms. Yaya is inviting students to participate in the Dance Team to prepare for a performance during our Good Neighbor Festival at the end of May. On Mondays she will lead Ribbon Dance sessions and on Tuesdays Hip Hop Dance sessions. Please let us know if you want your child to participate and plan for a 5:00pm dismissal.
On Thursday we are hosting a family game night from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
Thanks to all the families that are participating in our Chocolate Fundraising effort. We are halfway through!
We have updated our NJSLA testing calendar, based on the new format of the test. You can see details HERE. In ELA, math, and science, we are inserting test preparation inside our lessons, while still engaging in meaningful and relevant explorations of our world.
In ELA this week we are starting our third trimester unit, looking at why people in the USA and around the world move and what migrant or immigrant communities bring to their new homes. All students will be reading Inside Out Back Again by Thanhha Lai.
Social Studies project have to be completed this week.
The science lab this week is focused on designing a system to prevent erosion (in a tray). Children have been modeling how weathering, deposition, and erosion continually change our landscape.
Our math menu this week:
Level 4 - we explore perimeters and areas of rectangles as well as find the rules of patterns such as (3,7,4,8,5,...)
Level 5 - writing decimals as fractions, and using place-value charts help us multiply, add, and subtract decimals efficiently.
Level 6 - we are also working on computing decimals, learning to estimate and connecting visual models to the standard algorithm.
Level 7 - students continue to solve linear equations using both visual models and symbolic notation.
Level 8 - After finding the intersection of lines, we learn to solve linear systems and figure out how many solutions they have.
Remember that students have notes in their math cookbook and can access some of our reference pages here.
